What is Google Bard? Here’s everything you need to know

February 15, 2023

What is Google Bard?

Google’s experimental conversational AI chat service is called Bard. With the main distinction being that Google’s service will obtain all of its data from the internet, it is intended to operate similarly to OpenAI ChatGPT.

Google Bard is an AI text generator or chatbot that will work with Google’s search engine to offer text-based replies to user requests. The “Language Model for Dialogue Applications” (LaMDA) technology, which Google unveiled in 2021, will power it even though it was first revealed(opens in new tab) in early February 2023. You may recall that in June 2022, LaMDA made news (opens in new tab) when a Google engineer was put on paid administrative leave when he began to think that LaMDA was sentient. (The scientific community has thoroughly refuted(opens in new tab) these claims of ChatBot consciousness.)

Bard has yet to be launched, so it’s unclear exactly what features it will have or how it will compare to ChatGPT. But Google has provided some usage examples for Bard. In one, Bard is employed to enumerate the benefits and drawbacks of purchasing an electric vehicle. In another, the question is “What recent findings from the James Webb Space Telescope can I share with my 9-year-old?” Although keen watchers have already picked up on a mistake in one of Bard’s answers that many feel led to the price(opens in new tab) of Google’s stock falling, Bard responds with a bullet-point summary of the telescope’s successes.

When was Google Bard announced?

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced Bard in a statement on February 6. The AI chat service Google Bard is driven by Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), which was unveiled two years ago, despite the fact that Bard was a completely new idea at the time of its announcement.

How does Google Bard work?

LaMDA was built on Google’s open-sourced Transformer neural network architecture, which the company created in 2017. It’s interesting to note that Google claims that Transformer was also used to build GPT-3, the language model on which ChatGPT is based.

A lightweight model of LaMDA will be used in the first iteration of Bard since it uses less computing power and can grow to more users, according to the release. In addition to LaMDA, Bard will draw on all of the information gathered from the internet to provide responses. Pichai stated that pulling from the web would provide “fresh, high-quality responses.”

Who has access to Google Bard?

Google Bard has yet to be officially accessible to the public. According to Pichai, the tech giant is currently testing Bard with a small group of “trusted testers.” Feedback from both internal and external testing will be taken into consideration to ensure the service is ready for public release and adheres to Google’s AI responsibility standards. In the weeks following the announcement on February 6, Google stated that Bard will be available to everyone.

What is the controversy around Google Bard?

Google’s Bard had a difficult launch, delivering incorrect information on the James Webb Space Telescope in a demo (JWST). Google tweeted a demo of the AI chat service with the prompt, “What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about?” to announce the introduction of the AI service.

People quickly realized that the output response was factually inaccurate. According to Stephanie Condon of ZDNET, the VLT of the European Southern Observatory captured the first photo of an exoplanet in 2004. (Very Large Telescope).

Google’s LaMDA come under criticism before Bard was released. According to ZDNET reporter Tiernan Ray, former Google employee Blake Lemoine published a document shortly after LaMDA was released in which he shared that LaMDA might be “sentient.” After Google denied the sentience and placed Lemoine on paid administrative leave before letting him from the company, this controversy subsided.

Why did Google decide to unveil Google Bard now?

ChatGPT has been a huge success since its initial release. ChatGPT had more than a million users less than a week after its launch. The fastest-growing app of all time, according to research by the Swiss bank UBS, is ChatGPT. Because of this success, Google and other technology companies are attempting to get into the business while it’s still hot.

Microsoft introduced a new AI-improved Bing in the same week that Google unveiled Bard. This version of Microsoft Bing is driven by an advanced OpenAI ChatGPT Chatbot large language model designed exclusively for search.

What other AI services does Google have?

Google Bard has developed other AI Chatbot Services that have yet to be made available to the general public. When it comes to AI Chatbot products, the tech giant generally treads lightly and doesn’t release them until it is certain of their performance.

For example, Google Bard has created an AI image generator that, when it is published, could be an excellent alternative for OpenAI’s DALL-E. Google also has an AI music generator, MusicLM, which it says it has no intentions to share at this time.

In a recent paper on MusicLM, Google acknowledges the risks that these models could pose for the misappropriation of creative activity, as well as the biases that may be present in the training that may affect marginalized cultures and concerns about cultural appropriation.

The Final Thoughts

Today, with the development of cutting-edge technology, AI chatbots have upped the ante to deliver a multitude of chances and advancements to the IT business.

Owing to advancements in AI-led chatbots, Google has given a boost by launching Bard chatbot with a blend of deep learning, data analysis, and behavioral science.

Google Bard is the combination of three essential elements – Question and Answer Generation, Dialog Management, and Language Translation. Being an AI-powered chatbot, it simulates human conversation and contributes indispensably towards making business decisions.
